Thousands of Flights Cancelled due to Winter Weather - Tarmac Tragedy Stories Expected

Winter Snow Storms in the Northeast United States have caused the cancellation of thousands of flights heading into the weekend.  The cancellations are having a severe impact all around the country.  Some airports from Dayton to New York City have been closed.

Travellers from Orlando, Savannah and Charlotte are experiencing problems as a result of the cancellation even on flights that are direct flights to international destinations from those airports.  Charlotte travellers reported non-moving lines the length of the aiport for each type of flight including first class, international and domestic flights.

Among other things, the airlines seem to have continuing difficulty in keeping people informed about the problems.  Travellers have reported that they were unable to get through to their airlines to confirm their flights (online declared flight status as a go with no delays reported).  However, phoning the airlines systems for US Airways resulted in a wait of over 2 hours and then no response.  Those same travellers arrived at the airport four hours ahead of their flight departure time to be received in extremely long lines that are not moving.

This snarling of airline traffic is certain to bring a fresh round of tragic tarmac stories today.  Some flight somewhere is going to get tangled up and travelers are going to be the victims.
