Somali Leadership to Stone 5 Men to Death
The new Somali government will have 5 recently convicted rapists stoned to death as punishment for a rape that occurred 6 days ago, on June 22. The men pleaded guilty to the crime and were identified by the victims.
The move is being viewed as a signal to the west that the new government will follow a hard lined Islamists dogma reminiscent of that promoted by the Taliban in Afghanistan.
In addition, Sheikh Hassan Daihir Aweys, a former colonel and a person identified by the UN as an Al-Qaeda associate despite his denials, was named to a top post in the new Somali government.
The US government is taking a wait-and-see approach with recent developments in Somalia. The overthrow of US backed warlords caught the world somewhat by surprise. The new government has indicated that they will not be aggressive towards the US if the US does not show aggression towards their government.
The US has indicated that they will not currently establish official contact with the new government.
